About Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique that promotes relaxation, reduces stress and anxiety, and supports the body’s natural healing processes. It involves the practitioner channelling universal life energy to the recipient through gentle touch or by hovering their hands above the body.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki works on the principle that the practitioner can channel energy into the patient by means of touch or proximity, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Benefits may include deep relaxation, stress reduction, pain relief, improved sleep, enhanced mental clarity, and a general sense of wellbeing. It can also support the body’s natural healing processes.

Is Reiki a religious practice?

No, Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is a spiritual healing practice that is compatible with most beliefs and can be experienced by anyone regardless of their religious background.

How long has Reiki been practiced?

Reiki was developed in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. It has been practiced for about 100 years and has spread worldwide.

Is Reiki used in medical settings?

Yes, Reiki is increasingly being offered in hospitals and other healthcare settings as a complementary therapy. Many hospitals in the United States, Europe, and around the world now include Reiki as part of their integrative medicine programs. It’s often used to help patients manage pain, reduce anxiety, and cope with the side effects of treatments. For example, some cancer centres offer Reiki to help patients manage the side effects of chemotherapy.

However, it’s important to note that Reiki is used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments, not as a replacement for them.

In France, Reiki is generally not included within standard healthcare cover insurance such as mutuelles, so payment is at your own cost.

Is Reiki suitable for me?

Can anyone receive Reiki?

Yes, Reiki is suitable for people of all ages and conditions. It’s non-invasive and can be adapted to meet individual needs. However, if you are undergoing any kind of ongoing medical treatment, we advise checking with your doctor beforehand that they are happy for you to undertake complementary therapy.

Is Reiki considered safe for pregnant women?

Reiki is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Many women find it helpful for relaxation and stress relief. However, always consult with your healthcare provider before trying any new therapy during pregnancy.

Can children receive Reiki?

Yes, children can receive Reiki. Many find it calming and it can be particularly helpful for children with anxiety or sleep issues. Sessions are usually shorter for children.

Is Reiki suitable for people with medical conditions?

Reiki is used by millions of people as a safe complementary therapy for various medical conditions. Our advice is to always consult your doctor beforehand, especially if you have a serious health condition, to ensure that it is appropriate for you.

Can Reiki replace traditional medical treatments?

No, Reiki should not replace conventional medical treatment. It’s a complementary therapy that can work alongside traditional medicine to support overall wellbeing.

How often should I have Reiki treatments?

The frequency of sessions depends on individual needs. Some people benefit from weekly sessions, while others may only need monthly sessions. We can discuss a plan that works best for you in line with what you’d like to achieve.

What to expect at your Reiki session

Do I need to prepare or do anything before the session?

If it’s your first time at Serenity Flow Reiki, you’ll be asked to complete a patient registration form ahead of your visit, which will capture any information we need to know about your requirements, as well as assess your suitability for Reiki. We’ll let you know if we have any concerns, ahead of your visit.

Otherwise, no special preparation is needed. Come with an open mind and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, and shoes which you can easily slip off. You will remain fully clothed during the session.

Will the Reiki practitioner touch me during the session?

Reiki can be performed with light touch or with hands hovering above the body. We’ll discuss your preferences before the session begins, including a discussion on the areas of your body where you will be touched. Your practitioner will never touch you on or near the groin, or in the chest area if you are female.

We’ll always work with what you’re comfortable with.

Do I need to lie down, or can I sit?

Most sessions are conducted with the recipient lying on a massage table. You will have a head support and knee support if you have difficulty lying down flat, as well as cosy blankets to cover you should you wish. We provide a small step to assist you to get easily onto the table, if required.

Reiki can also be performed while you’re seated, if that’s more comfortable for you.

Do I have to remain silent during the session?

While many people choose to remain silent and relax, you’re welcome to talk or ask questions during the session if you feel the need.

To ease your relaxation, gentle music will be played during the session, and the therapy room will be lit with low, gentle light, including candlelight.

What sensations might I experience during the session?

Experiences vary, but many people report feeling warmth, tingling, or a sense of deep relaxation. Some may see colours or have emotional releases. Others may simply feel very relaxed or even fall asleep, which is absolutely fine.

Whether you experience one or more of the above – or none at all – don’t worry, as your physical response does not affect how effective the session is!

What to expect after your Reiki session

How will I feel after a Reiki session?

Most people feel very relaxed after a session. Some experience increased energy, while others may feel tired. Emotions can also surface as energy shifts.

Are there any side effects of Reiki?

Reiki is considered safe with no serious side effects. Some people may experience mild symptoms as the body releases toxins, such as headaches or fatigue, but these typically pass quickly. If you do experience anything which lasts more than a day or so, you should consult your doctor.

Is there anything specific I should do after the Reiki session?

It’s recommended to drink plenty of water, rest if you feel the need, and pay attention to any changes in your body or emotions over the next few days. We also recommend limiting any alcohol intake for the first 24 hours afterwards.

How soon can I expect to see results?

Some people feel immediate effects, while for others, the effects unfold over time. Reiki works differently for everyone, and regular sessions often yield the most noticeable results.

As Reiki works by helping to increase your high vibrational energy and clear low vibrational ‘stuck’ or negative energy, this can take a series of sessions to work most effectively. We will discuss your specific needs during your sessions, but we generally recommend a series of four to six sessions on a weekly or fortnightly basis, and then a monthly session to maintain your benefits.

Can I drive after a Reiki session?

Yes, it’s safe to drive after a session. However, if you feel very relaxed or sleepy, you should take a few minutes to fully wake up before driving. Have a walk around our grounds and enjoy the view!

How many Reiki sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on individual needs and goals. Some people benefit from a single session, while others prefer regular treatments. We can discuss a plan that works for you.

What if I don't feel any different after my Reiki session?

It’s normal for effects to be subtle or not immediately noticeable. Some people don’t feel much during or immediately after a session but notice changes in the days following. If you have concerns, please discuss them with your practitioner.
